Description
ART BASEL Auction, 26 October 26 PREVIOUS ESTIMATE: unsold at €10,000 / €15,000 with a reserve of €10,000 New estimate: €8,000–12,000, reserve €7,500 CHRISTOPHER MALLORY WILMARTH (1943–1987) Double Clearing, 1973 Sculpture on glass, signed 41 x 82 x 2.5 cm PROVENANCE Paula Cooper Gallery, New York, 1996. A discreet yet distinctive artist, whose work embodies a form of sensitive abstraction. He works with the material with an almost meditative attention, blending refined forms with internal tensions. His practice, often sculptural, engages with emptiness, balance, and a certain formal rigour. Double Clearing (1973) is a sculpture that perfectly embodies this approach. Two forms open out, responding to one another, as if suspended in space. Versilion, a smooth, dense synthetic material, allows for a subtle interplay of light and contrast. The work seems to hold its breath, poised between tension and tranquillity. Please request condition reports prior to the sale: these are not included in the lot descriptions.
