Description
DAVID SMITH (1906–1965) Untitled Ink drawing, signed with initials and dated 58-12-57 in the bottom right-hand corner 44.5 x 57 cm PROVENANCE Margo Leavin Gallery, Los Angeles. David Smith, born in 1906, is best known as a sculptor, but his ink drawings from 1957 reveal another facet of his work. In these compositions, he transposes his sense of volume and space onto the surface of the paper, combining fluid lines with dynamic forms. These drawings, often improvised, bear witness to his gestural energy and his interest in abstraction. They convey the same tension as his metal sculptures, but with a new, almost musical lightness. Please contact the gallery for condition reports.
