Description
Guy FERRER (born 1955) The Great Circle, 2013 Bronze EA I / III 117 × 62 × 27 cm Bibliography: Guy Ferrer, A Journey of Initiation: Bronze Testaments, Jardin des Plantes – Les Capellans, Saint-Cyprien – summer 2017; a similar model is reproduced in the catalogue. This work is part of an edition of 11 copies, 8 numbered from 1/8 to 8/8, and 3 artist’s proofs numbered from I/III to III/III. Although numbered I/III, the sculpture presented here is the last in this edition. Whilst in the other 10 copies the ends of the circle do not touch, this sculpture is the only one in which the circle closes, thus marking, according to the artist, the end of this creative cycle. Another distinctive feature of the copy presented here is the symbol of the Cross, carved exclusively on this final copy. The Great Circle refers to the sky, the cosmos and the movement of the planets, in contrast to the materiality of the earth. A figure appears within the Circle, alluding to a deity contemplating our human condition from on high. The artist, Guy Ferrer, explains that he fashioned this work by raising his arms, from below. He invites us, too, to contemplate it from below, looking up towards the mystery of the heavens. Nothing will remain, of my footsteps, of my shadow nothing will remain but a note Neither C nor B nor A, but an almost silence a fleeting whistle a held breath Erased from the visible, beyond the tangible, nothing will remain but a sound, my sound, recognised by Him alone?
