Giovanni Maria Scupola was active in Otranto in the early sixteenth century, where he perpetuated the tradition of Byzantine icon painting which remained vibrant in southern Italy. Signed works by the artist, including portable altarpieces and polyptychs, are preserved in Bologna, Bari, and the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, and have enabled scholars to reconstruct his oeuvre within the Italo-Byzantine tradition.
The right-hand wing of the present composition closely derives from an original by Scupola currently in the Pinacoteca Civica, Reggio Calabria (inv. no. 2095C), whilst the Crucifixion scene, central, corresponds to that represented in Scupola's Polyptych of the Life of Christ in Bari, underscoring the persistence of compositional formulas within the artist's circle.
For a discussion of Scupola and his oeuvre, see E. Moench, "La Lettre et le trait: Propos sur Giovanni Maria Scupola", in Bulletin de la Société Schongauer à Colmar, 1987, pp. 72-79.
