The present composition offers a meditation on the Holy Trinity. The Christ Child, placed between the Virgin and Saint Joseph, establishes a visual link between the earthly and divine realms, while above, God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove complete the Trinitarian image.
The painting is inscribed in gold with text from 1 John 5:7-8. Beneath God is written "Tres sunt, qui testimonium dant in coelo" ("There are three who bear witness in Heaven"), while a banner at the feet of the Holy Family reads "Tres sunt, qui testimonium dant in terra" ("There are three who bear witness on Earth"). Together, these texts affirm the unity of the Holy Trinity.
