Provenance Robinet Collection (according to a label on the reverse) Private Collection, France This intimate Virgo Lactans, showing the Virgin nursing the Christ Child with Saint Joseph behind, is set against a stark black background that accentuates the tender exchange between the figures. Painted on panel, the present work reflects the refined devotional imagery produced in Flanders during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when such representations of the Holy Family enjoyed wide popularity for private devotion.
