Provenance
Sale, Pandolfini, Florence, 1 July 2020, lot 12
Private Collection, Italy
The present work depicts the Virgin and Child accompanied by the Infant Saint John the Baptist, Saint Joseph and Saint Anne. The composition is characteristic of Giovanni Battista Ramenghi the Younger's devotional imagery, with the figures gathered in a closely knit arrangement that fills the pictorial field.
The panel relates to a group of works executed during the artist's mature career, including the celebrated Holy Family of 1563, now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (inv. INV 379). The sensitive modelling of the faces, the soft transitions of light and the harmonious interaction between the figures reflect Ramenghi's ability to combine Bolognese classicism and the artistic influences he encountered during his formative experiences in Rome and at Fontainebleau. An attribution to Innocenzo da Imola (c. 1490-1545) has been suggested in the past (see Sale, Lucas Aste Milano, 10 September, 2024, lot 776), but the handling of the paint, the compositional structure and chromatic sensibility more convincingly suggest Ramenghi's mature work.
At the time of the Pandolfini sale in 2020, the lot was accompanied by an expertise from Mina Gregori. According to the catalogue entry, the scholar noted the work's particular Bolognese character and suggested dating it to the mature phase of Bagnacavallo the Younger's career.
