Formerly offered as by a follower of Andrea Solario during the Christie's sales, the present Mater Dolorosa may more convincingly be associated with Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina (c. 1475-1536), considered one of the most important painters of the Spanish Renaissance. Having travelled to Italy at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Yáñez was influenced by the works of Leonardo da Vinci, with whom he is thought to have collaborated in Florence, possibly on the celebrated but now lost Battle of Anghiari.
