Description
111. Atelier de Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina (Almedina 1475-1537) Mater dolorosa oil on panel 73,5 x 61cm (28 15/16 x 24in). Provenance With Levison and Co, London, 1920 Sale, Christie's New York, 6 October 1994, lot 59 (as Andrea Solario) Sale, Christie's London, 5 December 1997, lot 46 (as Andrea Solario) Private Collection, France Formerly offered as by a follower of Andrea Solario during the Christie's sales, the present Mater Dolorosa may more convincingly be associated with Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina (c. 1475-1536), considered one of the most important painters of the Spanish Renaissance. Having travelled to Italy at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Yáñez was influenced by the works of Leonardo da Vinci, with whom he is thought to have collaborated in Florence, possibly on the celebrated but now lost Battle of Anghiari.
