Description
114. 114W Atelier de Jan Brueghel le Vieux (Bruxelles 1568-1625 Anvers) L'Entrée des animaux dans l'arche de Noé oil on canvas 109,5 x 193.6cm (43 1/8 x 76 1/4in). Provenance Private Collection, The Netherlands The Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark was one of the most popular subjects treated by the workshop of Jan Brueghel the Elder. Combining a biblical narrative with an impressive array of domestic and exotic animals, the subject enjoyed great favour throughout the seventeenth century and gave rise to numerous copies, variants and adaptations by members of the Brueghel workshop and their followers. The prime version by Jan Brueghel the Elder is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. 92.PB.82), with later versions in collections such as the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. P001407) and in the Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest (inv. 548 (629)). On a scale much larger than many of the known versions of the subject, the present painting is testament to this highly successful tradition.
