116. 116W Jan Wildens (Anvers 1586-1653) Le Christ guérissant l'aveugle oil on canvas 137,5 x 121cm (54 1/8 x 47 5/8in). Provenance The Collection of Dr Hans Wetzlar, Amsterdam The Cornwallis-West Collection (according to 1969 sale) With Hans Cramer, The Hague, 1965-66 Sale, Sotheby's, London, 3 December 1969, lot 52 (as Joos de Momper, bt Gaunt) Private Collection, Germany Exhibited Aachen, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Chambre privée. Flämische Meisterwerke aus dem Wohnzimmer eines Sammlers, Petersberg, 2018, exh. cat., p. 30-32, cat. no. 5 Previously attributed to fellow Antwerp artist Joos de Momper (1564-1635), the present painting has more recently been given to Jan Wildens and was exhibited as such in 2018-2019 (see Exhibited, catalogue entry by Claus Grimm). A further version of the present composition, also given to Joos de Momper was previously with the Sphinx Gallery, London (see Literature, fig. 1). In this latter work, however, the landscape opens out to the right to take in a wide vista across an extensive river landscape. Whilst the attribution for the landscape in the present painting has been under discussion, there is agreement that the figures are the work of Hans Jordaens III (c. 1595-1643). In his entry for the present painting, Grimm suggests that this is the prime version of the two pictures. The treatment of the landscape in this Christ healing the Blind Man can be compared to that in Wildens's painting of a Landscape with Christ and his Disciples on the Road to Emmaus now in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (acc. No. ГЭ-6319, of similar vertical dimensions) in which the figures are similarly given to Hans Jordaens.
