The iconography of this painting is particularly noteworthy. Set within a dark, atmospheric landscape, the composition depicts Christ crucified to vine branches laden with grapes, a visual expression of the Redeemer as the true vine. A ribbon scroll inscribed *** praebe mihi cor tuum unfurls beside Him. At the base of the tree, next to a terrestrial globe symbolising Christus caput mundi, a chalice receives the blood—transformed into wine—flowing from Christ, underscoring the Eucharistic meaning of the scene.
To the left stand the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph in attitudes of devotion; to the right, an angel kneels, playing music before the sacred mystery unfolding above.
A long inscription in the lower register, likely comprising prayers, reinforces the work's didactic and liturgical purpose and suggests that the painting was conceived for an ecclesiastical or monastic setting.
Though uncommon, the Allegory of the Eucharist has very early origins, with the earliest known representation appearing in a late‑twelfth‑century manuscript once kept in Strasbourg and destroyed in the 1870 fire.
