Description
130. 130W Domenico Gargiulo, dit Micco Spadaro (vers Naples 1609-1675) Le triomphe de David signed with monogram '.D. G.' (lower right) oil on canvas 101,1 x 128.9cm (39 13/16 x 50 3/4in). Provenance Sale, Finarte, Milan, 19-20 November 1963, lot 9 Private Collection, Italy Literature G. Sestieri and B. Duprà, Domenico Gargiulo, detto Micco Spadaro, Vicenza, 1994, p.147, cat. no. 48 The present painting is a variant of the composition now in the Städtische Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg (inv. 8720), from which it varies in several notable respects. The figures of David and the two soldiers flanking him are different, while the group of dancing women is expanded here and includes a young boy absent from the Augsburg painting. Differences can also be seen to the present work in the landscape, particularly in the treatment of the two towers. Known by his artistic name, Micco Spadaro, Domenico Gargiulo ranks among the leading painters of seventeenth‑century Naples. A pupil of Aniello Falcone, he was renowned for his luminous city views, historical narratives and vivid depictions of contemporary Neapolitan life, all characterised by precise architectural detail and a lively sense of observation.
