Bozzetto représentant l'Immaculée Conception, des saints intercédant pour les âmes du Purgatoire
oil on canvas
66 x 51.5cm (26 x 20 1/4in).
Provenance
Private Collection, France
Probably conceived as a preparatory bozzetto for an altarpiece, the present work displays an iconography characteristic of post-Tridentine spirituality. In the upper register, the Immaculate Conception appears amid a heavenly glory, while below, several saints, among whom Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi may be identified, intercede on behalf of the Souls in Purgatory depicted in the lower part of the composition. The painting thus illustrates doctrines reaffirmed by the Catholic Church following the Council of Trent, notably the mediatory role of the Virgin and the saints, as well as the efficacy of prayers offered for the dead.
This subject enjoyed particular popularity in Naples, where Marian devotion and the cult of the Souls in Purgatory occupied a central place in religious life. Numerous Neapolitan churches were adorned with altarpieces dedicated to this theme, including those of Santa Maria del Purgatorio ad Arco, Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio, and Santa Maria la Nova. By virtue of its succinct and effective composition, the present bozzetto belongs fully to this distinctive Neapolitan artistic and devotional tradition.
