Literature
D. Sanguineti, Domenico Piola 1628-1703. Percorsi di pittura barocca, Genoa, 2017, pp. 154-155, nos. 48 and 49, ill.
Executed by Domenico Piola (1627-1703), one of the foremost painters of the Genoese Baroque and head of the prolific Casa Piola workshop, the present canvases are a significant addition to the artist's oeuvre. Depicting Apollo and Vulcan, they most probably formed part of a decorative scheme. Others from the scheme may have been a pair depicting Venus and Diana, the latter possibly executed by Piola's son, Paolo Gerolamo Piola (see: Sale, Hampel, Munich, 27 June 2019, lot 693)
First published by Daniele Sanguineti, the paintings were originally conceived as elements of a decorative programme for a grand Genoese palace interior. Their elongated format, together with the painted volutes and floral festoons, strongly suggest that they formed part of a frieze or a series of overdoor decorations, probably installed within a palatial setting. Sanguineti has connected the present works with surviving fragments depicting putti, now at Villa Durazzo, Santa Margherita Ligure, which may once have been part of the same decorative scheme.
Probably executed after 1694, following the return of Domenico's son Paolo Gerolamo from Rome, the series combines the influences of Roman Baroque models, particularly those of Carlo Maratta, with the decorative sophistication for which Casa Piola was so well known at the close of the seventeenth century in Genoa.
