The present architectural capriccio is characteristic of Viviano Codazzi's mature production, combining an imaginative palace façade with a lively fountain forecourt and elegantly animated staffage. Giuliano Briganti (see Literature) was the first scholar to attribute the figures to Filippo Lauri, citing their close stylistic affinities with the latter's œuvre, an attribution subsequently accepted by Marshall and Sestieri (see Literature), who dated the work to circa 1660.
