A leading member of the celebrated Recco dynasty of artists, Giuseppe Recco was among the foremost still-life painters active in Naples during the second half of the seventeenth century. The present composition exemplifies his refined and style, combining an abundant bouquet of flowers with a magnificent gilt charger set upon a stone ledge and framed by a sumptuous red curtain. The dramatic drapery lends the arrangement a distinctly theatrical quality, enhancing its sense of grandeur. The subtle interplay of light across the flowers, metalwork and fabric demonstrates the artist's mastery in rendering contrasting textures and confirms his place among the principal exponents of the Neapolitan still-life tradition.
