150. Jan Weenix (Amsterdam 1640-1719) Nature morte aux oiseaux, dans un paysage oil on canvas 77,8 x 55.8cm (30 5/8 x 21 15/16in). Provenance With Douwes, Amsterdam, no. 7270 (according to a label on the reverse) Private Collection, Italy Sale, Casa d'aste Pitti, Florence, 10 March 1993, lot 442 Sale, Meeting Art, Vercelli, 7 May 2023, lot 185 Private Collection, Italy As a still-life painter of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age, Jan Weenix inherited the artistic legacy of his father, Jan Baptist Weenix, and enjoyed an international reputation for his elegant depictions of game and exotic birds. In the present work, a brilliantly coloured red parrot provides a vivid focal point, its vibrant plumage contrasting with the surrounding still life, while a landscape vista receding into the distance adds depth and atmosphere to the composition. A closely comparable composition is illustrated in Anke A. van Wagenberg-ter Hoeven, Jan Weenix: The Paintings. Master of the Dutch Hunting Still Life, Zwolle, 2018, no. 209. We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Jan Weenix on the basis of colour photographs.
