Estimate €5,000 - €7,000
Description
153. Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano 1702-1788 Florence) Paysage italien avec un jeune berger et son troupeau de chèvres oil on canvas 31,8 x 68.8cm (12 1/2 x 27 1/16in). Provenance Private Collection, London, 1982 Private Collection, Italy Literature E. Martini, La Pittura del Settecento veneto, Udini, 1982, fig. 249 F. Spadotto, Francesco Zuccarelli, Milan, 2007, p. 293, no 269 The present painting was first brought to scholarly attention by Martini in 1982, when it was recorded in an English Private Collection. It was subsequently republished by Spadotto, who noted the atmospheric, softly receding landscape and orizzonte sfumato as evidence of Sebastiano Ricci's (1659-1734) influence, reinterpreted by Zuccarelli through a more distinctly Arcadian sensibility. A closely related version of the present composition, differing only in minor details, is recorded by Spadotto (see Literature) and appeared on the art market at Kinsky, Vienna, 20 June 2023, lot 2061. The attribution to Francesco Zuccarelli has also been confirmed by Rodolfo Pallucchini, who expressed his opinion in written correspondence (undated).
