Lagrange, Joseph Vernet et la peinture au XVIIIe siècle: avec le texte des Livres de raison et un grand nombre de documents inédits, II ed. Paris 1864, p. 350, C. 254 F. Ingersoll-Smouse, Joseph Vernet peintre de marine, 1714-1789: étude critique, suivie d'un catalogue raisonné de son oeuvre peint, Paris, 1926, vol. II, p. 23, no 951 Painted during Vernet's mature period, the present Marine in a Storm reflects the artist's fascination with the forces of nature. Combining careful observation with an idealised vision of the landscape, Vernet captures the drama of a storm-lashed coast through animated waves, atmospheric light and a finely balanced composition. According to Lagrande (see Literature), the present painting can be identified with La Tempête, commissioned by Baron de Demidoff in December 1771. This provenance was then confirmed in 1926 by Florence Ingersoll-Smouse who published the work in her catalogue raisonné of the artist and proposed that it formed a pendant to Vernet's Marine, port de mer of 1772 (see Literature). According to the Capitolium art catalogue (2021), the painting was more recently re-examined by Émilie Beck Saiello, who confirmed the attribution and will include it in the forthcoming update to the artist's catalogue raisonné.
