La surprise
bears inscription 'Dietrick' (on the reverse)
oil on canvas, unlined
57 x 73.5cm (22 7/16 x 28 15/16in).
Provenance
Private Collection, France
The present painting is derived from La Surprise by Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), now at Schloss Sanssouci (inv. no. GK I 5620), Potsdam, having been acquired by Frederick II from Louis Fagon in 1747. The composition enjoyed considerable success during the eighteenth century, giving rise to numerous copies and variations.
An inscription on the reverse of the present work has led to its attribution to Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, called Dietricy (1712-1774), whose artistic practice was distinguished by the adaptation and reinterpretation of celebrated compositions by earlier masters. Renowned for his ability to work in the manner of Dutch, Flemish, French and Italian painters, Dietrich frequently drew upon well-known models, reimagining them for a contemporary audience. The presence of Coypel's composition in Prussia during Dietrich's lifetime provides a plausible context for the execution of the present work.
