Provenance Private Collection, France The present composition reflects the appeal of antique-inspired allegories in late eighteenth-century French paintings. Depicted kneeling before a flaming altar adorned with sculpted figures, a young vestal offers floral garlands while a small dog, the traditional emblem of fidelity, sits attentively at her side. The combination of the sacred fire, roses and canine companion suggests an allegory of enduring and faithful love, themes that enjoyed particular favour among artists working in the orbit of Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée. A similar work by Lagrenée, La Prière à l'Amour, was offered at Drouot, Paris, 25 November 1980, lot 119.
