159. Attribué à Jean-Baptiste Greuze (Tournus 1725-1805 Paris)
Etude de dame au ruban bleu
oil on paper laid down on canvas
46,7 x 38.8cm (18 3/8 x 15 1/4in).
Provenance
Private Collection, France
The present composition is related to Le Tendre Désir, one of the most successful sentimental subjects associated with Jean-Baptiste Greuze. The composition is known both through the painted version preserved at the Musée Condé, Chantilly (PE 393), dating to circa 1769, and through the engraved version (Musée du Louvre, Département des Arts Graphiques, inv. 6387 LR/ Recto) that contributed to the wide dissemination of the artist's imagery. Executed in reverse, the present lot suggests a relationship with the print, reflecting the crucial role played by reproductive engravings in disseminating Greuze's inventions throughout Europe.
