Inspired by the fishing communities of the Dutch coast, Jozef Israëls imbued everyday scenes with a quiet poetry and emotional depth. The present work, showing a mother carrying her child on her shoulders as she walks along the shoreline, exemplifies Israëls' sensitivity to the themes of family, motherhood and the intimate bond between mankind and the sea.
At the time of the Sotheby's sale, Dr. Dieuwertje Dekkers confirmed the authenticity of this work.
