Provenance Sale, Christie's, London, 8 June 2021, lot 17 Literature R. and M. Schmit, Stanislas Lépine, 1835-1892, Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint, Paris, 1993, p. 277, no. 686, ill. Influenced early in his career by the Dutch painter Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891), whose works he studied and copied, Stanislas Lépine developed a subtle and harmonious palette of silvery greys and muted blue-green tones that proved particularly suited to river and maritime subjects. A participant in the first Impressionist exhibition held at Nadar's studio in 1874, Lépine is now regarded as an important precursor of Impressionism. In the present work, the atmospheric treatment of the Seine is combined with a keen observation of contemporary life, the shipping activity and industrial presence along the river serving as a testament to the modernisation of Rouen during the period.
