Provenance With Gallery Motte, Geneva, 1971 Sale, Hampel, 28 March 2019, lot 456 Literature Robert Fernier, La vie et l'oeuvre de Gustave Courbet, catalogue raisonné, Tome II, Paris, 1978, cat. no. 34C, p. 250, illustrated. Listed as 'painted in exile, in collaboration with a student'. According to Robert Fernier, the present unfinished painting was executed circa 1876, during Gustave Courbet's final years in exile in Switzerland. Having been held responsible for the demolition of the Vendôme Column following the Paris Commune, Courbet left France in 1873 and settled on the shores of Lake Geneva, where he remained until his death in 1877. Despite the difficulties of exile, these years were marked by sustained artistic activity, and the present work, realised with the collaboration of an assistant, belongs to this late period of the artist's career, when he continued to explore familiar themes with remarkable freedom and spontaneity.
