Heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, John Brett excelled at representing the British coastline. As noted in The Times by the Royal Academy President, Brett 'soon became established as one of the most original of our landscape artists; he was an unconscious example to many who, no doubt, were not aware of the strength of his influence upon themselves.1
Described by the British art critic Frederic George Stephens as 'worth of his best time', the present work belongs to a series of large canvases that the artist painted in the 1890s. Chosen for the prestigious Chicago World's exposition, the work was then shown at London's Royal Academy, and illustrated in the accompanying literature.
