Description
186. Martin Rico Y Ortega (Madrid 1833-1908 Venise) Le Canal de la Giudecca et l'Eglise de Sainte Marie del Rosario, Venise signed 'Rico' (lower left) oil on canvas 49 x 68.4cm (19 5/16 x 26 15/16in). Provenance Private collection, Spain The long tradition of Venetian vedute—made famous during the Grand Tour by painters such as Canaletto (1697–1768) and Francesco Guardi (1712–1793)—created a strong market for luminous, recognisable views of the city. Rico's own tour of Italy in 1872 with Mariano Fortuny (1838–1874) proved decisive: captivated by Venice's light and architecture, he returned every summer, often working from a gondola to sketch buildings directly from the water. This period shaped Rico's mature style and secured his success as a leading painter of Venetian subjects.
