Description
SIBAUD (Jacques François), General (1753–1807). 52 signed autograph letters to his family. March 1789–November 1794. Approximately 136 pages on double-leaf sheets in-12 & in-8, some forming envelopes with wax seals, others with wood-engraved vignettes. Brown ink on laid paper.
Important unpublished correspondence from Sibaud, an infantry officer and later a general, to his mother, father and brother during the campaigns of the Revolution. He discusses his personal circumstances and some family matters, but above all the activities of his troops and his campaigns, including descriptions of operations.
A cavalry officer under the Ancien Régime, discharged in 1783, he sought to regain a post from the outset of the Revolution and was eventually appointed lieutenant-colonel in October 1791, taking command of the first battalion of volunteers from the Jura, his home region. He subsequently took part in the campaigns of the Army of the Rhine, was promoted to general on a provisional basis in October 1793, and then permanently in 1795.
He showed great zeal, ‘always in the thick of the action, always amidst the clamour of arms’, and a fervent republican zeal, which also bore witness to his ambition and his determination to have his own merits and those of his men recognised.
From 1792 onwards, his letters are dated from Sarreguemines, Mainz, Sélestat, Haguenau, Strasbourg, Worms, etc., as the troops moved.
A fine collection, very well preserved, from the family archives.
All the letters have been transcribed by hand in the late 19th century (including three that have since been lost).
Enclosed are:
• the notice of his funeral on 6 October 1807.
• a collection of 19 autograph documents and letters, most of them signed, addressed to General Sibaud or concerning his situation or his
battalion.
• a printed document, folio, concerning officers’ pay and the troops’ wages. 4 February 1792. Folded.
