Description
AVIGNON, SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY
A pair of silver candlesticks. They rest on a double-sided hexagonal base with a double moulding. The bowl is engraved with an oval medallion featuring interlaced letters. The shaft is attached by a screw thread just above the bell, which is highlighted by rows of fluting. Both the shaft and the finial are hexagonal in shape, with both the rings and the finial adorned with a shell motif and scrollwork on three sides.
Master silversmith: Joseph II ROUVIERE
Weight: 1442 g – height: 26.4 cm – base diameter: 14.8 cm
Hallmarks: the letter A for Avignon and the silversmith’s mark engraved twice
Condition: the screw-mounted shaft is unusual; this may be a very early 18th-century restoration
