Cartier is often described as the jeweller to kings and the king of jewellers, but it is often forgotten that he is also a master watchmaker renowned for his innovative designs. His history is marked by constant creativity, exemplified by watches that have become true icons, such as the Baignoire model.
Originally, Cartier designed a rectangular shape with rounded edges. This design gradually evolved, culminating in 1958 in a model known as the 'oval-curved', whose slightly curved case was designed to hug the shape of the wrist as closely as possible. Already featuring the brand's distinctive hallmarks — from the domed crystal to the Roman numerals stamped on the dial, and the slender gold ribbon highlighting its silhouette — this timepiece would not take on its current name, Baignoire (from the French for bathtub), until 1973.
