Boating and yachting watches are an important field for a sports device
manufacturer. The Solunar was made to measure the tides and the name
'Solunar' is a synthesis of 'sol' (sun) and 'lunar' (moon). The Heuer Solunar
has a long history in the Heuer portfolio since the 1950's and the Solunar
depicted here was the first tidal watch with an automatic movement. The
watch provides a bilingual weekday function and can be set either in French
or English.
The two swivels must be adjusted every two weeks and the distance between
the markings on the inner ring measure a time span of 50 minutes on the dial.
This interval is considered a practical average by experts for the daily change
in the timing of the tide. The inner ring lists 14 days and the first mark of 'Mon'
for Monday is set by turning the crown to the appropriate hour of the dial on
which high-tide is to fall on the given Monday. Accurate information as to the
timing of the tides is to be taken from newspapers or published tide tables
found in harbours. The inner ring is set with this simple operation of the
crown and enables the simple referencing of the time at which high-tide will
begin for each and every day of the week for two weeks' time. The outer ring
bears tide markers and a tide-cycle lasts approximately 12 hours with each
ebb and flow of the tide approximately 6 hours. The outer ring can be set to
mark high tide on a specific date via the inner ring's adjacency to the date
window.
Launched in 1975, the Heuer Solunar was advertised in the 1976, 1977 and
1978 catalogues and is an extremely rare collector's piece in this great condition.
