Sport – Jacques Auriac (1922–2003) – Rugby. Circa 1970. Printed by Chabriac, Toulouse. Original poster, lithograph, unmounted. Grade A. 156.5 × 117.5 cm.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Auriac embarked on a career as a poster artist. He worked under contract for De La Vasselais, a major French publisher which also represented Hervé Morvan and, for a time, Raymond Savignac. Auriac collaborated with numerous prestigious brands, including Bally, Evian, Gitane cigarettes and various airlines. Colour, dynamism and humour characterise his posters. Used sometimes on their own, sometimes in combination, his posters captivate the eye and exude modernity. This untitled rugby poster, with its dynamic, diagonal composition, is no exception: the players, with iridescent outlines, are vying for the ball, their abstract silhouettes taking shape against the lines of the rainbow. An almost psychedelic vintage poster.
