Description
Tourism – Adrien Sénéchal (1895–1974) – SNCF, Plombières-les-Bains, Vosges. 1939. Printer: Sénéchal, Reims. 100x62cm. Original poster, offset and lithograph, not mounted on canvas. Grade A.
Plombières-les-Bains, nicknamed the ‘Town of a Thousand Balconies’, was a very fashionable spa resort at various times, particularly in the 19th century, during the reigns of Louis-Philippe I and Emperor Napoleon III. The Romans founded this town over 2,000 years ago because of its hot springs with healing properties. Over the centuries, a succession of illustrious spa-goers have visited: Montaigne, Adélaïde and Victoire, daughters of Louis XV of France, Voltaire, and Beaumarchais (the premiere of his famous *The Marriage of Figaro* took place in Plombières; he owned the paper mill there between 1780 and 1788). This spa resort in Lorraine remains popular to this day.
