Description
CLARÉTIE (Jules), French novelist, playwright and columnist (1840–1913). He was Jules Verne’s first biographer. A collection comprising 57 signed autograph letters dated between 1871 and 1912, accompanied by 4 manuscripts, including 3 signed autographs and one autograph. A lithographed portrait is included. A very interesting and significant collection of friendly and professional correspondence, to which several manuscripts—probably unpublished—are appended. There are 34 signed autograph letters to various recipients, concerning the Comédie Française, relating to appointments and performances. The 23 autograph letters are addressed to Emmanuel Gonzalès, his ‘godfather’, concerning various everyday and personal matters. Regarding the two autograph manuscripts written in violet ink, one of which is signed, and which are probably unpublished <> (Achille Faure, Bookseller-Publisher), comprising eleven brief studies and travel accounts. The signed autograph manuscript is a tribute to the French painter John Lewis Brown, dated 1891, comprising 10 pp in-8. ‘There is a twofold interest in the sale of works of art bearing the name of John Lewis Brown, and I would say it provides an opportunity for a twofold tribute...’. Enclosed is the galley proof, 6 pp _ in-8 in violet ink. 1876. ‘I believe the correct title would be <<< Costumes of the Time of the Revolution. One cannot speak of “during the Revolution”, which was a state of affairs and not a reign…’.
