Stanisław Chlebowski arrived in Turkey in 1864. Tasked with studying landscapes with a view to depicting scenes from the Polish-Turkish war, he came to the attention of the Grand Vizier Fuad Pasha, who recommended him to Sultan Abdülaziz. The artist is also said to have been supported by Mehmet Sadyk Pasha (Michal Czajkowski), a Pole commanding the Cossacks in the Ottoman Empire. Until 1870, the Sultan commissioned several works from him, before appointing him court painter. Chlebowski produced several portraits of Abdülaziz on ivory, which the latter sent to various European sovereigns. Inspired by a photograph of the Abdullah brothers, the artist systematically depicted the sultan from the front, in a decorated military uniform. One of these miniatures is in the Albertina Museum in Vienna (no. 34663), another in the National Museum in Warsaw (inv. Min.546 MNW). Another example was sold by Ader on 30 September 2025, lot 170.
