Description
AALTO, Alvar (1898–1976) ‘L’-shaped leg, a demonstration piece illustrating the process: a solid birch upright, split at one end by a series of saw cuts into which veneer strips are glued, the resulting laminate bent at a right angle, with the strips left protruding in stepped layers. Length 42 cm – Width 4.5 cm - History. The ‘L’-shaped leg was developed by Alvar Aalto in collaboration with Otto Korhonen, technical director of the factory Oy. Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas Ab in Turku, and patented in 1933. Splitting the end of a solid timber piece and gluing strips into it allows it to be bent at a right angle without weakening it or requiring any additional joints; Aalto saw it as ‘the little sister of the architectural column’. The process formed the basis for more than fifty designs, including the No. 60 stool from 1933, which is still in the Artek catalogue.
