Description
Ger LATASTER (1920–2012) Untitled Large oil on canvas. Signed in the top left-hand corner. Countersigned on the reverse and numbered ‘57’. H. 160 x W. 181 cm Provenance: Paul Facchetti Gallery. Ger Lataster was a leading Dutch painter of the post-war abstract movement. Born in Schaesberg in 1920, he studied at the Maastricht School of Applied Arts and subsequently at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He made a name for himself in the 1950s with his abstract expressionist paintings, characterised by intense colours, a free, gestural style and a bold treatment of the medium. Although often associated with lyrical abstraction and the CoBrA movement, Lataster nevertheless maintained a personal and independent approach. His work evolved over the decades, moving from highly gestural abstract compositions to works that gradually incorporated geometric forms, objects and figurative elements. His work is featured in numerous international museum collections, notably at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and he has also taken part in major events such as Documenta. In 2010, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
