Description
A rare oval lidded porcelain tureen in blue and white, bearing a coat of arms. China, East India Company, 18th century. Kangxi period, circa 1720–1730. The body is decorated with a large coat-of-arms in the centre, surrounded by flowering branches; the handles are shaped like rabbit heads; the neck is emphasised by a frieze of scrollwork within a band. The lid is decorated with flowering branches, framed by a band featuring landscape scenes within reserved areas on a lattice-patterned background. The handle is shaped like a pomegranate. Length: 35 cm, Width: 25 cm, Height: 19 cm Height: 18 cm The coat of arms of the LETHIEULLIER family. A rare example of one of the earliest porcelain tableware sets produced by the Compagnie des Indes. Coat of arms reproduced in *Chinese Armorial Porcelain* by David Howard, p. 113. According to David C. A. Agnew, in *Protestant Exiles from France, Chiefly in the Reign of Louis XIV: Or, the Huguenot Refugees and Their Descendants in Great Britain and Ireland*, 3rd ed., vol. 1 (Refugees Naturalised Before 1681), London, Reeves & Turner, 1886, p. 196, Anne Lethieullier, born in 1696, daughter of Sir Christopher Lethieullier (c. 1639–1690) and Jeanne Du Quesne, married Sir Gerard Conyers (1649–20 July 1737), who was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1722.
