An exceptional and delicate Hereke silk carpet, Asia Minor, Turkey, circa 1950–1960 Silk velour, woven with gold threads on a silk ground Density: approx. 10,000 knots per dm² Prayer-shaped carpet Golden-beige field featuring a wavy Mirhab design woven with oxidised metal threads (a sign of age), adorned with a cartouche bearing poetic inscriptions and a scattered pattern of bulbs and palmettes in golden yellow and old gold, surrounded by slender stems with crenellated foliage in the form of stylised octopuses and serpentine motifs Four borders, the main one silver-coloured, featuring a scattering of cartouches with poetic inscriptions reminiscent of 17th-century Persian miniatures, and interlacing patterns of very finely drawn old-gold twigs 178 x 120 cm Remarkable finesse In fine condition Bibliography: Pure Silk Turkish Carpets from Hereke / Red by Ugur Ayyildiz. In 1844, when the Ottomans were forced to withdraw from Egypt, they transferred the large looms from the Cairo workshops to Hereke. This town, closer to Istanbul, seemed the ideal place to continue Cairo’s distinctive textile tradition, namely the production of superb carpets intended for the local aristocracy or European ambassadors. Indeed, a year earlier, in 1843, the Imperial Silk Manufactory had been inaugurated. From the outset, Hereke carpets were regarded as prestige pieces due to their exquisite craftsmanship and the quality of the materials used – silk and precious metal threads.
