DAUM NANCY. Barrel-shaped vase with six horizontal rings. A multi-layered frosted or hammered glass piece with opalescent tones in shades of amber, yellow and orange, featuring a rotating design partially etched with acid, finely enamelled and accented with gold. This model features a design comprising a flowering hop vine winding asymmetrically around the vase and a coat of arms consisting of a set square, a compass, a mallet and two crossed swords. A hot-applied glass barrel stopper adorned with a six-pointed star formed of two superimposed triangles engraved in gold (hexagram or Seal of Solomon). A work associated with Freemasonry or the guilds. A piece from the late 19th century, during the Art Nouveau period. Height: 25 cm. A rare piece produced outside the models listed in the crystalworks’ commercial catalogues, this vase was probably commissioned as a special order. Unsigned (the gold signature may have been worn away over time), the specific shape of this flattened ovoid barrel-shaped vase is found exclusively in the mould registers of the Nancy glassworks, established around 1895. The barrel shape, reminiscent of brewery casks, complements the choice of the hop motif, transforming what appears to be a utilitarian decorative art object linked to the world of Lorraine’s brewing industry into a highly symbolic piece.
