Description
Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659–1743) and workshop. Presumed portrait of M. de Montmorency. Oil on oval canvas.
Height: 80 cm. Width: 64 cm.
Gilded carved wooden frame, Louis XIV period.
Expert: Cabinet Turquin.
Inscription on the stretcher, handed down through the family: N de Montmorency /?
N. Montmorency / H[aut] Seigneu]r [de] (La Roche Gensac]
This apocryphal inscription refers to the couple Louise Adélaïde Anne Joseph de Montmorency Laval (1752–1820) and Anne Jeanne Thérèse Joséphine de La Roche Fontenille Gensac (1754–1823), but the portrait must be attributed to an earlier branch of their family, probably dating from around 1700–1705.
Frame: Carved and gilded wooden frame, Louis XIV period
We would like to thank Mr Stéphan Perreau for his assistance in describing our portrait.
