Description
PARIS, c. 1745–1749.
A two-tiered chest of drawers with a slightly undulating front, in rosewood and violetwood veneer, featuring a criss-cross marquetry design within recessed panels.
It opens at the front with three drawers in two rows, without cross-bars, and rests on four slightly curved legs.
Beautiful ornamentation in chiselled and gilded bronze, hallmarked with a crowned ‘C’, including pull handles, lock plates, lamp bases and uprights extending in a beaded frieze down to the ram’s-hoof feet.
The top is of veined grey breccia marble, moulded in a ‘bec de corbin’ style.
Louis XV period.
Height: 83 cm
Width: 113 cm
Depth: 53 cm
Marble restoration, signs of wear.
Note:
In 1745, an edict by Louis XV required all bronze smiths to mark their works with a “C” surmounted by a crown.
Used between 1748 and 1749, this tax mark—intended to finance the Wars of the Austrian Succession—enables us to date our chest of drawers with precision.
