Description
Based on a design by Jean BOUCAULT (who was admitted to the Guild on 8 April 1728) for the Baron de Breteuil.
A pair of armchairs with flat, curved backs in moulded, carved and gilded wood, decorated with a frieze of acanthus leaves highlighted by a row of pearls.
The tapered legs feature twisted fluting and are decorated with foliage at the base.
Louis XVI style.
Height: 90 cm
Width: 45 cm
Depth: 57.5 cm
Some gilding is missing.
Note:
Our pair of armchairs is modelled on the chairs crafted by the joiner Jean Boucault (who became a master in 1728) and delivered by the King’s official upholsterer, Claude-François Capin in 1783, for the Baron de Breteuil at the Palace of Versailles. The set comprised ‘a lampas suite consisting of a tapestry with a border, a large ‘confident’ sofa, a chequered tête-à-tête, two queen’s bergères, six armchairs, four chairs, four curtains in eight panels of lampas’ (Arch. nat., O1 3534). Two chairs from this set are held at the J. P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. 71.DA.92), another at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (inv. 32-191/10) and a pair of bergères was sold at Christie’s, Paris, on 10 September 2018, lot 71 (Juan de Beistegui collection).
