16. A patinated and gilt-bronze peacock clock, first half of the 19th century
The dial is inscribed in the wheel of the peacock, on the back is inscit the movement, it rests on a vegetated base with brown patina on an oval trophy base symbolizing love and a frieze of roses, balance ended by a butterfly (slight oxidation, lack of patina on the base, no key, no guarantee of working order), 26.5cm wide, 13cm deep, 42cm high (10in wide, 5in deep, 16 1/2in high).
Queen of the Olympian gods and wife of Zeus, Hera is the goddess of lawful marriage, family and fertility. She embodies royal majesty and authority. Renowned for her jealousy toward Zeus's numerous lovers, myth also portrays her as a protector of the marital bond.
Queen of Heaven and Olympus, she is often depicted as a regal woman bearing royal attributes; here, however, she is suggested only through her sacred animal, the peacock, recalling Argus, whose hundred eyes she placed upon the bird's plumage.
