40. An Empire gilt-bronze mantel clock depicting Paris, by Denière The central figure is depicted seated on the well's rim, wearing a Phrygian cap and holding out the apple. The dial, enamelled in white with black Roman numerals for the hours and signed 'Denière & Mantelin / Fabriquand DeBronze à Paris', is set within an architectural frame reminiscent of an ancient temple, bearing the inscription 'A la plus belle'. It has a rectangular base and small feet. Best known for the "Judgement of Paris," the Trojan prince is visited by Aphrodite, Hera and Athena, who appoint him judge in their contest of beauty and offer him the golden apple of discord inscribed "To the Fairest." Each attempts to win his favour with a gift: Hera promises sovereignty over Asia Minor; Athena offers wisdom and military glory; Aphrodite, the hand of the most beautiful woman in the world. The latter ultimately wins the Trojan's vote. Sent as an ambassador to Greece at the court of Menelaus, King of Sparta and husband of Helen, Aphrodite fulfils her promise and inspires love between Paris and Helen. The lovers flee together, triggering the outbreak of the Trojan War. Paris embodies choice, seduction and tragic destiny.
