Mantel clock in gilt-bronze depicting the kiss of Apollo, first half of the 19th century The movement and the white enamelled dial with black Roman numerals are surrounded by a frieze of roses, the four-finger fourths with a winding torch decoration, the base in green marble with an eagle decor with wings spread (slight wear due to gilding, oxidation on the hands, no key, no balance), 16cm wide, 11.5cm deep, 36cm high (6in wide, 4 1/2in deep, 14in high). Son of Zeus and Leto, and twin brother of Artemis, Apollo is one of the principal gods of the Greek pantheon. Despite his many functions, he is chiefly known as the god of light, the arts, music, poetry and prophecy. He embodies harmony, beauty and the ideal of youth. As an archer god, his attributes also include the lyre and the laurel.
