Sir John Frederick, created a baronet in June 1723, was born in March 1678.
He was the son of Thomas Frederick and Leonora, heiress of Charles
Marescoe. A prominent London merchant, he notably
contributed to the funding of the reconstruction of Christ’s Hospital following the
Great Fire of London, with a sum of £5,000. Several
of his brothers were also involved in trade with Asia: John
Frederick served as supercargo for the South Sea
Company, whilst Bartholomew Frederick succeeded him in this
post following his death in 1755. The title of baronet then passed
to the descendants of their brother, Sir Thomas Frederick, who had been
governor of Fort St David in East India.
