Description
Porcelain plate with a coat-of-arms design for the Scottish market (Michie), China. Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1750. The plate is decorated in ‘Famille Rose’ enamels, with the Michie coat of arms in the centre and a border of gilded foliage on the rim. These arms are similar to those of the Macdonalds, but belong to the Michie family. The crest depicts a severed right hand, placed in fess, holding a dagger in natural colours vertically. The mottos are: ‘Pro patria et libertate’ and ‘Contendo’. The coat of arms indicates a kinship with the MacDonald clan, as clearly shown by the border of thistles. The two crowns almost certainly allude to the Kingdom of the Isles and the Kingdom of Man, which were held by the MacDonalds in the 12th and early 13th centuries. Dimensions: 22 cm A star-shaped fel and splinters in the border.
