Description
Porcelain plate with a coat-of-arms design for the Dutch market (De Famars and Vriesen), China. Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1752/1755. The plate is decorated with a gold border on the rim, a frieze of spearheads on the cavetto, and in the centre, the dexter coat of arms of De Famars, comprising four quarters: 1st and 4th, on a black field, seven gold fleurs-de-lis; 2nd and 3rd, on a white field, a black eagle standing upright. The Vreisen coat of arms on the left, on a black field, features a white band with three black cow’s heads. Dr Kroes attributes the commission for this table service to Jan Willem de Famars (1715–1785) of Lingen. A chip in the centre of the plate; some signs of wear. Diameter: 23 cm
Despite his Prussian origins, Jan Willem de Famars joined
the Dutch army’s cavalry in 1734, where he rose through the ranks,
advancing from cornet to lieutenant in 1737, captain in 1742, major
in 1748, military commander of Nijmegen in 1762 and
lieutenant-general in 1766. In 1752, Jan Willem married Johanna
Geertruid Vreisen (1734–1807) in Zwolle, a union which this service
commemorates. The Vriesens were one of the wealthiest
and most powerful families in Zwolle.
